the old grain house ....... is in the charming, golden-stoned Cotswold village of Lower Swell by the pretty clear water of the River Dikler. It is an ideal centre for easy access to Cheltenham, Cirencester, Oxford, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon and the many great houses, gardens and other places of interest in which the area abounds. The Villages of Lower and Upper Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water are also nearby. Stow-on-the-Wold, the focal point of the north Cotswolds is only a few minutes away, here you will find plenty of pubs, hotels, antique shops round the market square. A mineral spring was discovered in Lower Swell early in the nineteenth century and it was hoped to develop the village as a Spa, but the only reminder of the grand idea is an ornate facade of a cottage, aptly named Spa Cottage, and it remains a lovely, tranquil corner of Gloucestershire. Surrounded by wonderful walking country, ancient tracks and footpaths lead straight from the village high over the wolds. At one time the valley up to Stow-onthe-Wold was densely wooded and it was said....... "The squirrel can hop from Swell to Stow, Without resting his foot or wetting his toe" ........now there is a clear view from the house up to the tower of Stow Church. |
