LATEST TOURISM TRENDS
JANUARY TO MARCH 2009
The Headlines for March (AS SUPPLIED BY VISIT BRITAIN) …
• The number of overseas residents visiting the UK in the three months from January to March
2009 was down 13% compared with the same period of 2008, whilst total spend over this period
was neither up nor down in nominal terms.
• Sterling was (on average) 29% weaker against the US dollar and 16% weaker against the Euro
in March 2009 compared to March 2008, meaning that most visitors’ currencies are
going further, with each visitor spending more on average.
• Visits in the first three months of 2009 from EU15 countries (that is those nations members
of the European Union before the 2004 expansion) are down 7% compared to the same period
of 2008.
• However visits from other regions showed less resilience to the current economic climate:
• Visits from North America are down 21% in the first three months of 2009 compared with
the same period of 2008.
• Visits from Accession countries are down 24% in the first three months of 2009 while visits
from non-EU countries in Europe are down 29% compared to the same period of 2008.
• Visits from remaining parts of the world (Central and South America, Africa, Middle East,
Asia and Australasia) were down 17% in January to March 2009 compared to January to March
2008.
• Eurozone consumer confidence fell further in March, and February Eurozone unemployment
figures show an increase to 8.5%.
• In the USA consumer confidence remained flat in March, close to an all-time low, whilst
unemployment rose to 8.5%.
• Figures for the 3 months of January to March 2009 show that outbound visits by UK residents
were down by 19% compared to the same period of 2008, with visits to North America down
by 29%, visits to Europe down 18%, and visits to the remaining parts of the world down
by 17%.
• Outbound visitors spent 13% less in January to March 2009 compared to the same period of
2008.
• It is worth noting that during the first three months of this year there was disruption
to travel due to heavy snow in February, no leap day as there was in 2008, and Easter did
not occur as it was in April this year as opposed to March last year. Each of these factors
will have contributed somewhat to the apparent year-on-year decline in visits.
• According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, international tourist arrivals world-wide
are estimated to be 8% lower in the first two months of 2009 compared to the same period
of 2008.
2009 Message from Cotswolds.Info
The UK will be in economic recession in 2009.
The number of tourists from abroad to the UK will decline.
The overall negative impact on our Tourist Industry will be offset to some extent by two factors
The reduced value of the £ against the $ thus attracting Americans looking for value
UK residents holidaying at home rather than abroad
What can Accommodation Providers do to maintain their market share at 2008 levels.
Look closely at your business marketing with a view to being more effective
Get rid of the advertising that does not work and spend this money with those companies that have proven to work best.
The best value for money advertising is on the Internet but beware of Internet companies that are not highly ranked with the Search Engines or you are wasting your money.
Make sure you run promotional Hot Deals in those time of low business to boost your visitor enquiry rate.
Ensure your website accurately reflects your high standards. In the competitive market place of 2009 a poor website will be counter productive.

THE ROLE OF THE SEARCH ENGINES IN TRAVEL PURCHASES
Users Make 12 Travel Searches Before Purchase
Twenty million people in the UK used search engines for travel information in the first quarter of 2007, according to a new study from Google U.K. and comScore.
Users on average make 12 travel related searches, visit 22 Web sites and take 29 days from the first time they search until they make a purchase. Forty-five percent of transactions happen four weeks or more after the first search. Time spent online is lengthy allowing advertisers to reach and influence users as they search for information.
On average users visit a site they will make a purchase from 2.5 times. Only 10 percent of transactions take place on the first search referral to a given site, and 38 percent of transactions happen at four weeks or more after the first visit.
Fifty-four percent of users started the shopping process with a generic product or destination search term, and 10 percent did not use branded search terms at all. More than a third of travel buyers use a generic term as the last search before they purchase.
Users change the type of keywords they use as they progress in the purchase process. Twenty-nine percent start with a non-branded search term but end with a brand search term.
Google U.K.'s Robin Frewer, Industry Leader, Travel said, "This research proves travel searchers are becoming more brand fickle - spending a large amount of time researching their desired purchase, and considering offers from competing brands."
"The fact that users are using more generic search queries gives ample opportunity for brands to attract new customers - and brands that are not present during these searches are missing out on sales."
Cotswolds.Info has some 560 web pages of information about the unique region we have the fortune to live in making it the World’s largest Internet resource for the Cotswolds.
A website is only as good as its ranking with the leading Search Engines and www.cotswolds.info is top of first page ranked with Google, Yahoo and MSN.
In peak season the number of daily visitors to our website approaches 6000 per day and in low winter season we still manage to maintain an enviable 4000 visitors per day; many of whom are looking for accommodation within the Cotswolds area and the surrounding six English Counties that make up the Cotswolds region.
We are your shop window to the world and our aim is to get as many UK and International Visitors to the inside of your shop (your website) as possible.

We are ourselves a Cotswolds business and are committed to continually increasing the brand awareness of the Cotswolds so the region attracts the highest number of tourists with longer stays throughout the whole of the year.
Our record of keeping our advertisers, after their first year of advertising with us, to 99% speaks volumes of the excellent service we provide in bringing you, our Advertising Client, the much needed high volumes of booking enquiries.
The Year Ahead - 2009
The next 12 months is going to be a testing time for the Tourist Industry due to the world economic climate. In this situation we all need to look closely at our businesses and the outgoing costs.
Advertising is one of those costs and those companies that are effectively working well for you should be continued to be supported and those not should be ditched.
It can also be argued that in depressing economic times your advertising budget should be increased not decreased to maintain your previous levels of business!
On the bright side two factors will help Tourism:-
Low level of the pound against the dollar will see cheaper holidays to the UK from the USA and other foreign countries.
Many more UK residents will be choosing to holiday at home rather than abroad.
Cotswolds.Info is here to help your business succeed – if you need friendly advice please do not hesitate to e-mail us or give Richard Pinder a ring to talk over any concern or how we may help you to increase your visitor enquiries in times of low business. If you need assistance in spreading your payments for advertising then please contact us.

History of Cotswolds.Info
The web site was started in March 2002 stimulated by the fact that none of the official
tourist bodies promoted the entire Cotswolds region and also, in your webmasters humble
opinion, neither did existing web sites do the job professionally. It was also a stroke
of luck that we were able to acquire the highly generic new domain name 'cotswolds.info'.
The web site now gets an average of 5000 visitors per day, is top ranked
for the search term 'cotswolds' with Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AltaVista and has been
featured on BBC Radio 4 and Japanese Television.
We now have over 700 advertisers spread out over the whole of the Cotswolds region and
beyond.
